Zip your clothes into a few and a carry-on stops being a landfill you dig through at 6 a.m. and becomes something you can pack, and repack, in about ninety seconds. The problem is that most "best packing cubes" roundups just rank whatever pays the most. Short answer: the right packing cubes can. Compression cubes squeeze air out of soft clothes and can shave an inch or two off a bulging bag. Plain organizer cubes just tidy. Both are useful. Only one buys you space.
How to choose the best packing cubes for a carry-on
Three things separate a cube you keep from one that lives in a closet forever:
- Compression vs. organizer. Compression cubes add a second zipper that flattens the load. If your bag is always a hair too fat, start here.
- Material and zippers. Ripstop nylon and chunky zippers survive being over-stuffed. Thin mesh and dainty zippers do not.
- Sizing to your bag. A cube set built for a checked bag will fight a 22-inch carry-on. Match the cube to the shell you actually fly with.

Do packing cubes actually save space?
Compression cubes do. By pushing air out of soft items like tees and socks, a good set can buy back one to two inches of depth, which is often the difference between the gate and the overhead. Non-compression cubes save you time, not room.
Will packing cubes help my bag pass the sizer?
Sometimes. Compression cubes can pull a soft-sided bag back into shape, but they cannot shrink a hard shell that is already over on length or width. If your bag is over on the frame, cubes will not save you. If it is over because it is bulging, they might.
How many packing cubes do I need for a carry-on?
Most people are fine with two large and one small: one for tops, one for bottoms, one for underwear and chargers. More than that and you are just adding zippers.
